Paul R. Tiemann, 85, of Benton, AR, brother of Ginger Kidd (Dean), passed away Sunday morning, April 12, 2015. He was born July 1, 1929 in Evansville, Indiana to the late Mr. and Mrs. August H. Tiemann.
Paul grew up in Evansville during the depression and World War II. He was an Eagle Scout and helped in all of the efforts on the home front to win the war. After graduation from F.J. Reitz High School, he moved to Garland, TX with his family. He was a member of the Air Force R.O.T.C. at Southern Methodist University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education and public school administration. After graduation, he was ordered to active duty in the Air Force.
Lt. Tiemann was stationed for six months at Wolters AFB in Texas. He served in the 136th and 58th Fighter Bomber Wings in Korea. The last six months of active duty were spent at Forbes AFB, Kansas. He served six years in the Reserves, where he was discharged as a Captain. He was a member of the Military Order of World Wars.
After service in the Air Force, Paul returned to Garland and began teaching 8th grade American History. During this period, he received his Masters of Education from SMU. He worked with the youth of the community in the Boy Scouts, church, Pony League, and as an assistant football coach. He made an impression on thousands of youth in his time.
From 1967 - 1970, he was the principal of Bauxite Jr. - Sr. High School in Bauxite, Arkansas. He was secretary of the Lion's Club.
Paul returned to Garland and focused on High School level teaching. He taught Government and Economics, American History, and Advanced Placement American History. He handled the voter registration for 18-year olds and is famous for his talks on patriotic holidays, such as Constitution Day and Veteran's Day. He was the sponsor of the National Honor Society.
Paul has traveled all over the country and the world and shared those experiences with his students. His favorite states traveled included Texas, Virginia, Colorado, Hawaii, and Alaska. His favorite foreign countries traveled were Germany, England, Norway, Austria, Czeck Republic, Australia, and New Zealand. He also went on a tour of World War II European battlefields. He served as a school representative to the Garland American Bicentennial Committee and on the school committee for the Texas Sesqui-centennial and Constitution Bicentennial's. He also served on school curriculum and textbook selection committees, as well as school insurance and career ladder committees.
Paul was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Garland, TX. He served on the administrative board most of his life, as well as work on Missions. He also taught Sunday School.
Paul was active in politics and only missed voting in one election since he was 21.
He moved to Benton in 2009 and resided at Mt. Carmel Community and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Benton.
Paul is survived by his sister, Ginger Kidd and husband Dean. He was a wonderful uncle to Kyle Kidd, Marsha Guffey, Monica Moore, and Maria Doolen; and his great nieces and nephews, Sarah Kinser, Daniel Guffey, Molly Moore, Susanna Moore, Faith Doolen, and Gus Kinser. He was dearly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Reception Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 15th, 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Smith - Benton Funeral Home, 322 N. Market Street, Benton, AR 72015. Graveside Service will be held Friday, April 17th, at 11:15 A.M. at Dallas - Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, TX 75211.
