Joe Nalley

March 2, 1951 — October 3, 2019

Joe Nalley

Joe Steve Nalley was born March 2, 1951 in Little Rock, AR to Jones E. and Doris Mae Nalley. He went to be with his Lord and Savior on October 3, 2019 with his wife Fern at his bedside.
Steve served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam 1968-69 and with the U.S. Navy 1973-74. It was while he was in Vietnam that he met his future life partner Fern through a mutual friend via letter writing. He married Fern on September 24, 1970 and after a short time in Ft. Riley, Kansas, they moved to Northern MN. He did not talk a lot about his early years, but he had decided to leave AR after his military discharge.
Steve worked for Marvin Windows (and ate bologna sandwiches for 9 years, he would joke). He moved his young family to the Iron range of MN to work for U.S. Steel in 1980. During those years of uncertainty and mass layoffs at the mines, Steve held several positions to make a living. He was a school custodian, boiler operator, and he started a small engine business. It was a real test of faith financially, but we never missed a payment. He often would talk about the choices we made that proved miraculous. In 1986, he moved the family to Little Rock. He worked in maintenance at Arkansas Children's Hospital for several years, and took night classes at UALR for carpentry and construction. He worked in commercial construction and has put his mark on several buildings in Little Rock. His favorite project was the Embassy Suites of L.R. Steve was always an ambitious man.
He has served others with a compassionate heart. He was a leader in his church with the Royal Ranger program for boys, and served on the church board in earlier years. He loved his family greatly, and was passionate about many things. He loved a good debate, but his greatest concern above all was that he would not be a hindrance. He prayed often that he would be able to influence others for the Kingdom of God. Steve had a determined spirit and a strong will, but he also had a soft and gentle side that will be missed greatly.
Steve Nalley is survived by his wife of 49 years, Fern; son, "DJ" David (Nicole) Nalley; daughter, Brenda (Dave) Green; mother-in-law, Betty Schuh of Benton, AR; brother, Jones E. (Teresa) Nalley of Grovetown, GA; sister, Nancy (Frank) Andrysco of Valley Springs, AR; grandchildren, Shelby Nalley of Shannon Hills, AR; Austin and Lauren Green of Benton, AR; great-grands and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carlos (infant); sister, Brenda (infant); and brother, Billy Nalley; brother-in-law, Wayne Schuh; sister-in-law, Cinde Schuh Ketola; and most recently, his father-in-law, Clarence Schuh.
