Lavon Newberry-Rhodes

Lavon Jane Newberry Rhodes, 89 years old, passed away November 14, 2018,
in Benton, Arkansas. She was born September 3, 1929, in DeQueen, Arkansas. She
was preceded in death by her father and mother, Dean Everett Newberry, Sr., Ruth
Herring Newberry; son, Donald E. Rhodes, Jr.; brother, Dean E. Newberry, Jr., and
sister, Priscilla D. Newberry. Lavon is survived by one son, Michael Rhodes of Little
Rock, three daughters, Diana Barr, of Hendersonville, Tennessee, Janice Rhodes and
Shirley Holt (Will) of Benton. She also leaves behind six granddaughters, Stacy
Simpson (Rush), Jennifer Altom (Drew), Stephanie Johnson (Marc), Melissa White
(Steven), Hannah Howland (Jonathan) and Kristin Caudle (Bryson); 12 greatgrandchildren,
and sister-in-law, Jeanne Newberry, who was always like a sister to
Lavon.
Lavon worked at Dillards for over 30 years. She was a member of the Deborah
Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, Benton. She was also fortunate to be
surrounded by her wonderful neighbors. The friendships she made through her work at
Dillards, her Sunday School class, and her neighbors blessed her life greatly. Her family
and holiday celebrations together brought great joy to her, as well.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be in Selph Hall, First Baptist Church,
Benton, November 19, at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Rick Grant officiating. Private interment will
be in Redman Cemetery, DeQueen, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be
given to Saline Memorial Hospice, Bryant, Arkansas.
